I Remember

I remember the moment it clicked for me. It was late March 2020, and I was sitting in my living room in Wisconsin, scrolling through my phone while the world outside felt like it was grinding to a halt. The news was nonstop: empty streets, shuttered shops, and this invisible enemy they called COVID-19.

"Two weeks to flatten the curve."

Remember that? It started on March 16, 2020, when the White House rolled out those guidelines—social distancing, no gatherings over 10 people, work from home if you could. It was supposed to be temporary, a quick pause to keep hospitals from overflowing.

But as the days turned into weeks, something didn't add up.

Empty hospital hallways during the pandemic — While officials warned of overwhelmed hospitals, a different picture was emerging on social media.

I'd see reports of hospitals bracing for apocalypse-level surges, yet videos started popping up on TikTok and Twitter—nurses and doctors in full PPE, dancing in empty hallways to upbeat tracks like "Savage" by Megan Thee Stallion or "Don't Stop Believin'." The first ones went viral around April 1, 2020, right as New York City was supposedly in the thick of it. One clip from a Detroit hospital showed a whole team grooving in what looked like a deserted ER.

At the time, officials were warning of body bags piling up and ventilators running out, but these videos painted a different picture. Were hospitals overwhelmed, or was there more to the story? It felt like a disconnect, and it nagged at me.

The Mask Reversal

Then there was the mask thing. Back in February and early March 2020, Dr. Anthony Fauci—the guy who became the face of the U.S. response—was crystal clear.

The CDC echoed that: masks were for healthcare workers only, to avoid shortages. Fast-forward to April 3, 2020, and suddenly, the CDC recommends cloth masks for everyone in public. Fauci flipped, explaining it was based on new data about asymptomatic spread.
